The Kentucky Derby 134 Mint Julep

____________

_____________

The traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly 100 years has been the Mint Julep. An honored part of the Mint Julep tradition has been The Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Now for more than 18 years, "The Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby" has been The Early Times Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail.

During a two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby, close to 120,000 Early Time Mint Juleps are served. This requires there to be over 10,000 bottles of The Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail on hand, along with 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint, not to mention the 60,000 pounds of ice.

During the year when you crave a Mint Julep without the hassle of going to the Derby, you can now enjoy one of your own! You can find the Early Times Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail at your local retailer! However, if it is not available at you local retailer you can make one up on your own.

Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

  • 2 Cups sugar

  • 2 Cups water

  • Sprigs of fresh mint

  • Crushed ice

  • Early Times Kentucky Whisky

  • Silver Julep Cups

Preparation: Make a simple syrup by boiling 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water together for five minutes. Cool simple syrup mixture and place in a covered container. Add six to eight sprigs of fresh mint to simple syrup mixture. Refrigerate mixture overnight. Make one julep at a time. Fill a julep cup with crushed ice. Add 1 Tablespoon of the mint syrup mixture and 2 ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with spoon (this will frost the outside of the cup). Garnish drink with a sprig of fresh mint and serve.

Please drink responsibly!
