Clinton County

Clinton County was named for DeWitt Clinton, 1769-1828. He served in the United States Senate in New York . He introduced the 12^th amendment, electing the U.S. President, and Vice President. He served as major of New York for nine years. Then serving as Lieutenant Governor, and then as Governor.

The county was formed in 1836, being formed from Cumberland and Wayne Counties .

Marker # 597 Courthouse Burned

The courthouse was burned by guerrillas late in 1864, with all county records being destroyed in the fire. Twenty-two courthouses were burned in Kentucky during the Civil War.
