Historical Sites

Clark County 

  • Clark County is named for General George Rogers Clark, who came to the Kentucky territory from Virginia 1775He commanded an expedition into Illinois to take British forts that were threatened the United States ’ expansion into the North West .   

  • The county was formed from Bourbon and Fayette counties.

  • Marker # 1318 Caveland

The home of Richard Hickman is marked as a historical site.  He was Clark County ’s first legislative representative.  Richard Hickman served as General in the Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812, State senator, Lieutenant General, and also as Governor.

 

  • Marker # 1319 Clark County Hemp

This county produced 90 percent of the entire country’s yield of Hemp in the late 1800’s.  During World War II, Winchester selected this site as to offset the fiber shortage during the campaign of war. 

 

  • Marker # 1358 Colbyville Tavern

This tavern was built in the 1820’s by Colby Taylor and was a spot where United States President Andrew Jackson visited o relax while on a trip Winchester .    

 

  • Marker # 1274 Indian Old Fields

This is the site of Eskippakithiki, also called Kentake.  This was the last of Kentucky Indian towns.  It was occupied by the Shawnee Indians.  Daniel Boone also came to this location and viewed Kentucky from this point on June 7, 1769. 

 

  • Marker # 137 Lulbegrud Creek

This is the winter camp of Daniel and Squire Boon, Alexander Neeley and John Stuart, 1769-1770.  The creek was named by these people who stayed here during the winter, “Lorbrulgrd” of Gulliver’s Travels. 

 

  • Marker # 1068 Old Providence Church

Daniel Boone attended this church.  The church’s name was changed from Howard’s Creek to Providence Church .
