Historical Sites

Carter County 

  • Carter County was formed in 1838.  Carter county was the 88th county to be formed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky .  Created from Greenup and Lawrence Counties .     

 

  • Named for Colonel William Grayson Carter who served as a state senator, 1834-1838.

 

  • Marker # 1013 Boone Furnace

 A stone blast furnace, built in 1856.  It produced 1400 tons of iron that year. 

  •  Marker # 221 Civil War Reunion

Located at Christian College Campus in Grayson , Kentucky .  For years after the Civil War, men in blue and gray uniforms united annually. 

  •  Marker # 640 Home of Governor Fields

Home of Governor William Jason Fields, the 34th Governor of Kentucky .  He promoted Kentucky ’s first grant of Federal aid for road construction, teacher-training colleges at Murray and Morehead. 

  •  Marker # 1017 Hunnewell Furnace

Built in 1845, and rebuilt in 1870.  Its yearly capacity was 6000 tones of iron, mainly carried to Ohio River in Ox Carts, later by railroad. 

  •   Marker # 1014 Iron Hill Furnace

Built in 1873, by Iron Hills Furnace and Mining Co. It produced 962 tons of Iron for owners. 

  •  Marker # 914 Mount Savage Furnace

This furnace was built in 1848.  It operated 37 years.  It averaged in production of 15 toms of iron daily which was hauled to the Ohio River for shipment.  The iron that was produced here was used for rails, plows, cannon, and machines. 

  •  Marker # 1148 Pactolus Furnace

 This furnace was built in 1824.  The production was about three tons of iron during the course of one day.  The iron produced here was taken to the Ohio River for transpiration.

  •  Marker # 209  Saltpeter Cave

Saltpeter was minded here which was used for the production of gunpowder and was used by Kentucky riflemen during the War of 1812. 

  •  Marker # 1018 Star Furnace

This furnace was built in 1848, with production of 2600 tons of iron in 1866.   

Kentucky has been a major producer of iron since 1791, ranked 3rd in the United States in 1830s, 11th in 1965.
