Campbell County 

  • Campbell County was formed in 1794 and was the 19th county of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 

  • The county is named for Colonel John Campbell, who founded the city of Louisville.

  •  Marker # 1706 Tommygun Inventor

Brigadier General John T. Thompson is credited as the inventor of Thompson submachine gun. He was a graduate of West Point. This gun is often known as the gangster weapon.    

 

  • Marker # 1642 Grant’s Lick

In 1793, salt water was found at this site by Samuel Bryan, who is a nephew of Daniel Boone. This site supplied salt to Kentucky. John Grant, who also is a nephew of Daniel Boone, owned the land of this salt and thus the land was named for him. 

 

  • Marker # 599 Newport Barracks

This is an early army post that was built in 1804. This post was strategic military point at which Kentucky troops assembled for the Canadian invasion during the War of 1812.  This site was used as a military prison. 

 

  • Marker # 990 Samuel Woodfill

He was given the Congressional Medal of Honor, French Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor. Alone he destroyed three machine gun nets, killing 19 enemies at Cunel, France, on October 12, 1918. Samuel Woodfill was from Campbell County, Kentucky. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in 1951. 

   

  • Marker # 1867 William H. Horsfall

William H. Horsfall is one of the youngest Kentuckians to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service during the American Civil War.
