Historical Sites

Calloway County 

  • The county was named for Colonel Richard Calloway, who came to Kentucky with Daniel Boon in 1776.  He was one of the founders of Boonesborough. He was killed by Indians at Boonesborough. 

 

  • The county was formed from Hickman County in 1822.

 

  • Marker # 1945 Calloway Normal College

Located at The United Methodist Church in Kirksey, KY. This institution of high education was established by 1899 under the leadership of Rainey T. Wells who later was the president of Murray State Teachers College. This school operated as a college for those seeking to be teachers until 1913. 

After Calloway Normal College ceased to be in operation in 1913, Kirksey High School occupied the property. The school used this property until 1974, when Kirksey United Methodist Church purchased the property. 

 

  • Marker # 1427 Murray State University  

Rainey T. Wells (1875-1958) founded Murray State University in 1922. Dr. John W. Carr (1859-1960) was the first president of Murray State.

  • Marker # 1770 The Cooperative Program

 Under the leadership of H. Boyce Taylor of First Baptist Church, Murray, KY began a new approach to church finance. H. Boyce Taylor who served as pastor 1897-1931 promoted a unified budget plan. He was appointed chainman of a State Baptist Committee in 1913 in order to work on unifying the work of Baptist. During 1914-1915, Taylor and F.D. Perkins toured The Commonwealth of Kentucky, promoting the unified plan. 

In 1915, The General Association of Baptist in Kentucky adopted the first budget plan, known as The Cooperative Program. This was adopted in 1925 by the Southern Baptist Convention in Memphis, and named The Cooperative Program.
