Garrard County - Lady with the Hatchet

Marker # 1733 Birthplace of Carry A. Nation

With a hatchet in her hand, this famous Kentuckian harassed saloon owners across this nation.  On Carry Nation Road in Lancaster , Kentucky was the house where Carry A. Nation was born.  She lived here for five years and then moved and lived in other Kentucky towns before moving out west.  When Kansas banned liquor, Carry began a crusade there in 1899, smashing furniture, mirrors, and bottles.

Lady with the Hatchet, Carry Nation gave direction to the anti-liquor movement, which led to Prohibition, 1920-1933.  She was mostly driven by bitterness from her first marriage to an alcoholic.  Carry’s methods however, landed her in jail some thirty times.  She died in 1911 and was buried in Belton , Mo.
