Marker # 704 Confederate States of America Starts Retreat

In September, 1862, Confederates moved supply depot here from Lexington . Union General Braxton Bragg led in destroying the food supply to the Confederate line. Confederate General Polk and General Smith began retreating through Cumberland Gap during October of 1862.
