Garrard County was formed out of parts of Lincoln, Madison, and Mercer counties, being the 25^th county of Kentucky . Lancaster , was established in 1798 as the county seat. The county was named for James Garrard, then governor of Kentucky , (1796-1804). Garrard, who was a native of Virginia , served in the American Revolutionary War. He was a member of statehood and Constitution conventions at Danville , 1784-1792.
