Gallatin County - Gallatin County Named

Marker # 747 County Named 1798

The county was named for Albert Gallatin, (1761-1849) a Swiss, who came to the United States in 1780. He served in the Kentucky Legislature for three years, then going and serving in Congress. He was a leader in finance, constitutional and international law, Secretary of the Treasury, Treaty of Ghent in 1814; Minister to France, and in England. He then went onto to serve as the National (later Gallatin) Bank of New York, president, 1831-1839).
