Fleming County - Private First Class, Franklin Runyon Sousley, USMC

 

Marker # 855 Iwo Jima Hero  

Private First Class, Franklin Runyon Sousley, USMC.  One of six of the 25th Regiment.  Part of the 5th Marine Division who raised the American flag on Suribachi on February 23, 1945.  This event was immortalized in Joe Rosenthal’s framed American Press Photograph.  Sousley was birthed in 1925 in Fleming County, Kentucky.  Suribachi landed on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945, but died one month after the historical victory.

The Purple Heart

Presidential Unit Citation (with one star representing Iwo Jima)

Asjatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with one star representing Iwo Jima)

World War II Victory Medal

 

PFC Sousley was originally buried on the Island of Iwo Jima, but later was moved to Elizaville Cemetery, located in Fleming County, Kentucky.
