Fayette County - U.S. President, For A Day

 David Rice Atchison

David R. Atchison, born in 1807, a graduate of Transylvania University.  He moved to Missouri, serving as a United States Senator, being part of the Democratic Party.  He served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate for a total of six years.

David Rice Atchison is well known for being the President of The United States of America for only one day. This matter is of great debate. At the end of the Presidency of Polk, General Zachary Taylor would be inaugurated on March 4, 1849. However, this inauguration fell on Sunday.  General Zachary Taylor refused to be inaugurated on Sunday, thus waiting until Monday March 5, 1849, to become the United States President.  So accordingly the Presidency was handed down to the then acting, Vice President, David Atchison until Zachary Taylor took the oath, accepting the office of the President of the United States of America.

It is important to take note that David Rice Atchison never took the oath of office for either Vice President or President. Even though it is very clear that William R. King who served as President Franklin Pierce’s vice president died while in office, leaving the office to that of the President Pro Tem, who was Atchison. Then as the presidency of Franklin Pierce’s term expired on March 4, 1849, there was no legal president of the United States, but would have been handed down to the vice president, Atchison.  Then on Monday, March 5, Zachary Taylor was sworn in as president.
