Fayette County - Lewis and Clark

Marker # 2193 Lewis and Clark in Kentucky, George Shannon

George Shannon was the youngest member of the 1803-1806 Lewis & Clark Expedition. He studied at Transylvania University, and practiced law in Lexington.

He served in the Kentucky legislature 1820-1823 and in 1824, state circuit judge. In 1828 Shannon and his family moved to Missouri.

William Clark in Lexington & Meriwether Lewis in Lexington

William Clark, co-leader of the 1803-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition, and his family spent October 30, 1809, at Lexington’s Traveler’s Hall, operated by Cuthbert Banks. Clark also visited expedition member George W. Shannon, who was attending Transylvania University.

On January 20, 1808, Lewis attended a dinner in his honor at Wilson’s Inn. Lewis was passing though Kentucky, after he was named the Governor of The Louisiana Territory.
