Fayette County - Kentucky State Government 

 

Marker # 1553 Cheapside

This log schoolhouse was one of the first buildings outside the fort walls in 1782. The first school teacher, John McKinney, was attacked by a wildcat. 

East of Cheapside is the public square, where the courthouse of Lexington has stood since 1788. The present courthouse is the fifth courthouse. 

 

Marker # 1466 Dr. Luke P. Blackburn Correctional Complex

Originally Kentucky Village, this complex was renamed for Dr. Luke P. Blackburn, 26th Governor of Kentucky, in recognition of his pioneer efforts in prison reform.  He was elected Governor in 1879. 

 

Marker # 1033 Eastern State Hospital

This was the second State Mental Hospital built in the United States. The Fayette Hospital organized in 1816.  “The Lunatic Asylum” opened May 1, 1824. It has been operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky since. It was renamed Eastern State Hospital in 1913. 

 

Marker # 1551 First Inauguration

Isaac Shelby was inaugurated as the 1st governor of Kentucky, on June 4, 1792. 

 

Marker # 157 Site of First Kentucky Legislature

This is the site of the first meeting of the General Assembly for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The first two sessions begun on June 4, and November 5, 1792. Isaac Shelby was the governor at this time.
