Fayette County - Henry Clay

 

Marker # 1 Ashland

This is the historic site of the home of Henry Clay (1777-1852), who was an orator, Statesman, and Patriot.  He is given the title of Kentucky’s favorite son.    

 

Marker # 2235 Ashland  

This is the home of Henry Clay. He served as a state legislator, U.S. representative and senator, house speaker, as well as secretary of state. He ran for U.S. President in 1824, 1832, and 1844.  He also served as an attorney, practicing law for more than 50 years. He imported and bred livestock, which include thoroughbreds at this location. 

Abraham Lincoln called Henry Clay, “my beau ideal of a statesman, for whom I fought all my humble life.”  Lincoln voted for Clay in 1834 & 1844. Lincoln quoted Henry Clay in many important speeches. 

 

Marker # 9 Fort Clay  

At this fort, extensive earthworks with ditch, drawbridges and magazine were constructed here by Federal forces after the Battle of  “Ashland,” May 1862.

 

Marker # 139 Henry Clay’s Law Office      

This office was erected 1803-1804, this is the only office standing used by Henry Clay. During the years of 1804 through 1810, Clay was elected to successive terms in legislature and to terms in the United States Senate.
