Butler County

This was the 53rd county to be formed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Butler County was named for General Richard Butler who served during the American Revolutionary War. General Richard Butler died in the Battle of the Wabash, a battle between the United States an Indian confederacy, as part of the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795).

Butler County has one of only two monuments that are dedicated to soldiers who lived and died from both sides during the Civil War. This monument was dedicated on May 30, 1907. The dual allegiance of the Civil War monument also is significant in the fact that Butler County was divided in it’s support for both the Union and the Confederacy States during the American Civil War.

This life-sized Union soldier stands on top of a twelve foot high pedestal.  On the pedestal, the images of Union , President Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant.

In addition to the two U.S. figures on this Statue, it also honors the Confederate General Joseph Wheeler. CSA General Joseph Wheeler played a large role in the largest Civil War battle in Kentucky, which happened at Perryville in October 1862.

Joseph Wheeler became the only man in history to serve as Brigadier General in both the Confederate and the U.S. Army.  He was a Confederate general during the Civil War, and then he commanded the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War.  The monument was erected one year after his death.
