Breathitt County

Breathitt County was formed from parts of Estill, Clay, and Perry counties in 1839.

The county was named for Governor John Breathitt, who died while serving in office.

Breathitt was the name of the county seat, until in 1845 it was changed to Jackson. The town was named Jackson honoring a hero of The Battle of New Orleans in 1815, Andrew Jackson the 7^th president of The United States.

During World War I, Breathitt County was the only county in the United States to fill its quota of service men by volunteers. No men had to be drafted from Breathitt County . At this time Kentuckians ranked among the highest in national physical fitness.
