Historical Sites

Bracken County

The county was formed from parts of Cambpell and Mason Counties.

Bracken County was named for William Bracken, who was a hunter, fisherman, and Indian fighter.

Marker # 1213 Bracken County Wine

During the 1870’s, Bracken County was leading wine producing county in the entire United States. This is the last remaining wine cellar, with a 3 foot thick wall of native limestone and a vaulted ceiling.

Marker # 2076 John Gregg Fee (1816-1901)

John Fee was a founder of Berea College. He desired that this school would be a low-cost education for all people, regardless of race. John Fee wrote many pamphlets, fighting slavery.

Marker # 1565 Walcott Covered Bridge

Located in Brooksville, it is known as the white bridge, spans 75 feet over Locust Creek. The Walcott community used this covered bridge from 1824-1854.

There were more than 400 covered bridges in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The few that remain are glimpse into Kentucky’s past.
