Boyd County

This area was settled by 1799 by members of the Poage family from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This county was once known as Poage’s Landing until renamed in 1854 for Henry Clay’s Lexington estate.

The county was named for Linn Boyd. Linn Boyd served in Kentucky legislature 1827-1831, U.S. Congress 1835-1837, 1839-1855, and speaker 1851-1855.  Boyd was elected as Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky; however, Boyd died before assuming his post.
