Eastern Kentucky

 

Greenbo Lake State Park - Ashland

Description - 15 miles of mountain bike trails on over 3,000 acres at Greenbo Lake. There are bike rentals available at the Jesse Stuart Lodge.

Directions - Greenbo Lake is located on KY 1711. From Louisville take 64 east to the Grayson exit and the park is 18 mile north of the exit.

 

Buckskin - Morehead

Description - There are many loop opportunities that include Hog Pen and the Cave Run trails. The trail follows the shortline from the Zilpo Recreation area to the Stoney Cove Recreation area.

Directions - Take I-64 east to exit 123 and go east on US 60 for six miles. Take a right turn on to KY 211 and go 4.5 miles. Turn left onto FS 129 when you see the Daniel Boone National Forest sign follow back to FS 918 which take you to Zilpo Recreation Area. Look for large sign at the end of Zilpo that reads Buckskin trailhead.

 

Caney Loop - Morehead

Description - Good trail for beginners but fun for the experienced riders. It has a little of everything for anyone looking for a good and challenging ride. There are fast sections, sand, rocks, roots, logs, creek crossings, a few tricky climbs, and some great scenery.

Directions - Take I-64 east to exit 133 and then head south on KY 801 towards the lake. Go right on to KY 826 and you will go past the Corps of Engineers Office. Go over the dam take a left into Stoney Cove Recreation Area. Plenty of parking, trailhead is up the hill on the left of the gravel road. Suggestion: park at the back of the parking area. 

 

Clear Creek/Iron Furnace - Morehead

Description - Deemed as one of the best areas to ride in the Cave Run area, it has everything for the rider. There are long downhills, lung and leg busting climbs, jumps, logs, roots and much more. The Iron Furnace and a mile long monster switchback climb, considered one of the toughest in the state of KY. 

Directions - Take I-64 east to exit 123 and go east on US 60 for 6 miles. Take a right turn on to HWY 211 and go 4.5 miles. Turn left on to FS 918 when you see the Daniel Boone National Park sign. There are parking areas on the right by the boat ramp about 2 miles up the road. You may go further down the road to the campground area and park. The Clear Creek trailhead is on the other side of the road and the Iron Furnace trailhead is down by the campground. 

 

Sheltowee/MSU/Rodburn - Morehead

Description - Good for the advanced riders as the trails are rated from difficult to advanced.

Directions - Take I-64 east to Morehead exit. Park in Morehead public parking lots if you want to begin off 32 or Wilson. Or park at Rodburn to start the opposite side. Take 60 east from 32 in Morehead to get to Rodburn.

 

Tater Knob/Buck Creek - Morehead

Description - Connects Tate Knob Lookout Tower with the Buck Creek trail. Trail is marked well. The highest point of the trail is 1,240 feet and lowest point at 820 feet. 

Directions - Take I-64 east from Louisville to exit 123 and go east on US 60 for 6 miles. Take a right turn on to HWY 211 and go 4.5 miles. Turn left when you see the Daniel Boone National Park sign on FS 918 and head towards the Zilpo campground. The road is windy and you will stay on it until you see signs for the Tater Knob Lookout Tower. 

 

Visitor Center/Big Limestone/Lakeview Ridge - Morehead

Description - The trailhead begins off KY 801 across from the Morehead District Visitor Center building and parking area and heads north on the Sheltowee Trace trail. Lakeview Ridge has some of the most scenic views. Big Limestone is a fast singletrack that is rideable year round. 

Directions - Take I-64 east to exit 133 and go south on KY 801 towards the lake. Cross US 60 and go past KY 826 on the right. Look for the Visitor center parking area on your right. The trailhead is across the road. 

 

Kiser Hollow Trail - Olive Hill

Description - Located in Carters Caves State Park where the trail has multiple purposes for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. There is a parking area where the trailhead is located. Not a great trail for biking due to the horse traffic. 

Directions - Carters Caves are located 30 miles west of Ashland, KY. Take I-64 to KY 182 north.
