The Breaks Interstate Park Referred to as breaks by the early settlers, Breaks Interstate Park is one of the largest canyon's east of the Mississippi River with 12 miles of hiking trails and four scenic overlooks including: Overlook Trail, Prospectors Tail, Grassy Overlook Trail, and Geological Trail. The canyon walls are 1,600 feet deep, with elevations ranging from 870 feet to nearly 2,000. The Breaks Interstate Park offers guests cabins, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a motor lodge, and a visitor center. Also available are Class A sites with full and partial hookups, tent sites, fireplaces, showers, and toilet facilities. There is also a dumping station. The campground is open from April through October. Guests are welcome to enter the park all year long, seven days a week for sightseeing or for hiking. There is an entrance fee of $1.00 per car and $2.00 per bus. Tent sites are $7.00 a site. Guests will discover many mile of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. There are horse stables and horse rentals available. For kayaking and rafting guests will find Class IV, V, and VI rapids. This is during Dam release in October. For the fisherman, there is trout fishing. The park is located just 7 miles east of Elkhorn City, Kentucky and 8 miles north of Haysi, Virginia on KY-VA 80.
